This 16km-long ravine is the longest in Europe. So it\u2019s a serious \u2013 but spectacular \u2013 five to six-hour trek that\u2019s not for the unfit or faint-hearted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll start by driving through the White Mountains to your starting point \u2013 the Xyloskalo staircase, which zigzags some 200 metres down into the gorge. You\u2019ll pass tiny chapels, walk between the high ravine walls and maybe spot some of Crete\u2019s wild \u2018kri-kri\u2019 goats. The highlight though, is the \u2018Iron Gates\u2019 \u2013 the narrowest section of the gorge where the 300-metre-high walls stand just 3 metres apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end, you\u2019ll reach the seaside village of Agia Roumeli, where if you\u2019ve made good time, you can take a swim or relax in a taverna. Then, when everyone\u2019s ready, you\u2019ll catch a boat along the coast to where your coach awaits.
